Critique

Missed my usual 8:15 S-Train into the city and caught the 8:25 instead. TONS more people on this one.

Had my first critique this morning with Nils-Ole, Flemming, and Bjørli. I could have gotten way more sleep last night than I did. We are given 10 minutes each to talk to them, and I think I used up about 3. Maybe 4. And while that could be good or bad, I'm taking it as a good sign.

I had three designs (as were required). I presented them quickly, giving the ideas behind each, and then turned it over to them.

'Kate, which one do you like best?'
'My first design.'
'Why?'
'I can draw it in 5 seconds.'
'Great! Do it!'

Obviously, there are other reasons why I like that design over the others. But that's the first reason that popped into my head. And I guess it worked. Flemming, the steel expert, told me to start working out the details: rod placement and number, connection of rod to tube, diameter of tube, radius of curves. I'm toying with the idea of not doing a cantilever so that I can reduce the diameter of the steel tube, but I'll have to see. A few more revisions are in the works, but I'm surprised at how easy this was. No trying to make it more complicated. No drawing out the design process. Quick and painless. Take it and run.

I've looked at this sketch so much over the past two days that it seems like this chair already exists somewhere. Like it's not my idea but something that I've seen in passing before and am just regurgitating. I certainly hope I'm not.

The rest of the day is sort of planned. I'm meeting up with a guy from my dorm, Bob Mod (yes that is his name and yes it is awesome), for lunch and a trip to the pharmacy. I'm getting throat medicine and pain killers. Lots and lots of pain killers. After that, it's random shopping and SLEEP LIKE I'VE NEVER KNOWN BEFORE.

I love your blog.Reminds me of when I didn't have to work...

So, I have to tell you that at first glance, I had also thought I had seen that chair. Maybe as a barstool, though? I know it's inspired by Bertoia, and people are using that design direction again. It could just be our imaginations, but if I see anything, I'll tell you.

I have a comment on the cantilever from a use standpoint, if you care about that one. People increasingly (men mostly) will push their chairs back and balance on the back legs. In the office, it has caused failure in the metal tubing and the chairs have actually folded in half with peope in them. (You might have seen the ones with the blue seats and metal tubing? Those used to be everywhere and now we are down to 5.)

Ok, i'll stop talking now and let you do what you totally know how to do.

P.S. The "Chucks Around The World" is great! I had seen something similiar on Photojojo about photographing your shoes in cool places and i'm totally doing it in NYC!

The chair design is way cool. How refreshing to see people who think simplicity is a good thing (unlike some folks I work with). Have a good afternoon with the wondrously named Bob Mod. And get some drugs! Also thanks to April for offering you more meaningful comments on the design than I could ever do. (Her comment about the cantilever design is kinda scary, and yet I *like* that design.) Lubboo!

We did see the Bertoia Diamond Lounge while we were at on of the modern museums, so it definitely did give me some inspiration. Actually, when I first drew the design, it was a bar stool, so it's funny that you mention that.

I would have LOVED to see someone bend one of those chairs in half! Was it Ed? I could see Ed doing that.

And I'll have to do more "Chucks Around the World" when I head up to Stockholm and Helsinki.

Thanks for the opinions!
